In Holland Stands a House 7/7/2009At Ranby House School the Year 8 children recently performed a stunningly emotional performance of ‘In Holland Stands A House’, a play based on the diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish teenager whose account of her and her family’s struggle to exist, and of the ebb and flow of daily life spent in hiding and fear of discovery from the Nazis in occupied Amsterdam in 1942.
The play was performed on two consecutive nights to a capacity audience who were captivated and moved by this powerful story.

Ranby House School have been supporting a Zambian charity called
Isubilo.
The children have been bringing in their old black shoes that they have grown out of. They have collected over 150 pairs for the charity which have been sent to Zambia. All children in Zambia must have black shoes to go to school. The word “Isubilo” comes form the Bemba language, meaning HOPE!
The children of Ranby House School have certainly given HOPE to many orphaned children.
Ranby House School are thrilled to announce that a record number of Scholarships, Exhibitions and Awards have been gained by their pupils to senior schools.
Twenty children have gained Academic, Sport, Music and Leadership Awards which is an outstanding achievement.
Pictured are the proud children who have gained these awards. Many congratulations to them all!

On Friday 5th June Years 3 and 4 at Ranby House School enjoyed a fun workout with a fitness instructor organised by the Charity LEPRA. The workout was in celebration of £1200 raised by the pupils for the work of the charity.
A week earlier Trina Stubbs had spoken about the work of the charity in many parts of the world. She challenged the pupils to raise £21 each, the cost of treating and curing someone of Leprosy.
The photograph shows the presentation of the cheque for £1200 to the Lepra Charity by pupils of Ranby House School and the Headmaster, Mr David Sibson.

15th Inter-School Educational Exchange
As part of the operation of the Town twinning arrangement between Bassetlaw and the town of Aurillac in the Auvergne region of France, March once again saw parties of pupils and staff from Ranby House School in Retford and Collège La Jordanne from Aurillac visiting each other.
On 7th March a party of 40 pupils and 4 staff arrived at Ranby for a six-night stay, with each pupil assigned to stay with the family of a pupil at Ranby House to allow opportunities to practise their English. During their stay they spent time in school, visited historic Lincoln and the Jorvik Museum at York, spent a day discovering the history of steel-making in Sheffield, as well as shopping and learning to play cricket!
More recently, a party of 40 pupils, 3 GAP students and 5 staff set off for Aurillac, in France, with the Ranby pupils and students staying with the families of students at Collège la Jordanne to enable them to practise their French language skills. Daytime activities included skiing, as Aurillac is in the Massif Central mountains, exploring prehistoric stalactite-filled caves, discovering some of the historic sites in the area, as well as experiencing school life and French food!
The visit was completed by two nights and days in Paris on the way back, with visits to many of the most important and well-known sites.
This exchange has been in existence for nearly twenty years, and we expect to continue these visits each year in the future.

However the main event was a variety show held in the school’s performing arts centre. All the children raised sponsorship to ‘Do Something Funny for Money’. Eighty-four children laughed for over 2 hours whilst raising nearly £2,500.

Three days later with many of the runners still feeling the effects of Saturday's run a group of dedicated Ranby runners made the short journey to Worksop College for the U13 and U11 boys' and girl's cross country. The weather was foul, so just right for running.
Our U11 girls looked strong and although we had good competition from other prep schools we were again team winners. Emily Mitchell won the race with Philippa Wilson a close 2nd. Philippa certainly made Emily work hard for her win. Ellie Jackson was 5th and Philippa Emmans helped the overall team score with a solid run.
In the U11 boys' Alistair Smith was a terrific 3rd, Oliver Dane ran one of his best races of his season to come 4th, Tom Wilkinson also ran superbly to finish 6th and Henry Pymm came in 8th to give the U11's a winning score of just 21 points.
The U13 girls ran well grouping in pairs. Rosie Haith was the first Ranby runner home with a fantastic run coming 3rd and Annabel Strawson was close by in 5th.
The last race was the U13 boys', this was a very competitive race. Guy Durdy found himself having to chase a very good runner who had beaten him at Berry Hill on Saturday. Guy had to settle for 2nd place. Harry Strawson was 4th, Tom Cundy 5th and Jack McKay 6th giving Ranby an awesome score of 17. This meant another team victory. FANTASTIC!
With three out of the four titles going to Ranby it was inevitable that we retained the overall cup.
This was a super afternoon for Ranby House School with another great team performance from all the runners. The boys' and girls' again were very supportive of one another and showed that they all have that Ranby House spirit.
On Saturday 28th February 16 Ranby Boys' and Girls' travelled to Berry Hill Park in Mansfield to represent the district of Bassetlaw. The standard was extremely high and the length of the races challenging. Many Ranby runners were also competing against children a year older than themselves.
In the Year 7 girls' Race, Emily Mitchell was 4th and Philippa Wilson was 5th. In the Year 7 boys' Alistair Smith was 5th, Henry Pymm 11th and Oliver Dane 13th. Annabel Strawson was the only Year 8 girl runner and put in a good performance running against a very strong field. In the Year 8 Boys' Guy Durdy again impressed coming 11th. Guy has been selected as a county reserve for the county championship.
Congratulations to the overall shield winners of the Individual Music Festival:-
Junior Final - Megan McKay
Intermediate Final - Jessica Vernon, Arabella White, Isabelle Woods and Emma Parkin (ensemble performance)
Senior Final - Leo Graves

This was simply another super team effort by all Ranby Runners. Top 12 in each race and top four of the winning teams will represent Bassetlaw at the county finals. The Ranby teams were extremely supportive to each other and a credit to the school.

The Ranby House School “Mummers Group” celebrated its twenty-first year of operation by performing "St. George and the Dragon" a total of eight times in support of Scope. The charity was chosen by the performers after having heard of it during a Chapel presentation by a member of staff at Ranby House.
The total raised of £1316 (a new highest figure!) has been presented to Mrs Tracie Linehan, Principal of Rutland House School in Nottingham, which specialises in the education and care of children who have complex learning difficulties, including cerebral palsy.
On Wednesday the Boys from Year 7 and 8 took to the fields to take part in the highly awaited Senior Group Rugby Competition. During the afternoon a series of gruelling and physical matches took place but in the end there could be only one winner and 'C' Group came out on top unbeaten in the competition.
The results were as follows:
'C' Group 3 wins
'A' Group 2 wins
'B' Group 1 win
'D' Group 0 wins
The standard of rugby was high and the children played with a good sense of Group spirit and enthusiasm.

The past fortnight at Ranby House school has seen a splendid array of Drama peformed in the Theatre. On Saturday the 8th of November Year 4 put on an entertaining rendition of the pantomime Cinderella.
Then on Tuesday the 18th & Wednesday the 19th Year 6 presented the humourous musical of the Beast's of St Bozo's. There was plenty of nonsense and laughs with pupils and teachers disappearing, a werewolf in the woods and a mad science teacher trying to turn everyone into zombies all set in a seemingly normal rural Nottinghamshire prep school.
![]() | |
These two shows involved all of the pupils in Year 4 and Year 6 and was a tribute to the high standard of drama and music tuition they have received. Thanks must also be made to all the staff and parents that helped the children in putting on two excellent performances.

Pupils and parents at Ranby House School have been busy making up Christmas Shoe Boxes to bring hope and a smile to children caught in the midst of wars, natural disasters and extreme poverty and to show those children that they have not been forgotten.
The 151 boxes that the children have filled full of toys and goodies have been handed over to the Operation Christmas Child, Samaritan’s Purse charity who will be distributing them to some of the world’s poorest children.

The year marks the Diamond Jubilee of Ranby House School. As part of the celebrations the school had a “Birthday Cake”. The picture shows some of the Pre-Prep children together with David Sibson, Headmaster, and Pat Connor, Head of Pre-Prep, blowing out the 60 candles!! Afterwards all the pupils and staff received a piece of the celebratory birthday cake.
As most were getting ready for the start of half term, eight Ranby runners in year 5 and 6 were making the journey to Mansfield to represent Bassettlaw in the Primary School Relay Cross Country Finals.
The girls’ team of Danielle Heath, Ellie Jackson, Philippa Wilson and Emily Mitchell were up first. Danielle went off first putting us in third place; Ellie then took over and paced her lap to perfection finishing strongly and we were in a commanding position up front. Philippa continued the superb team performance and piled on the pressure as our lead was extending. Emily had the last leg and comfortably brought us home in first place. A great team effort.
Then it was the boys’ turn. Could they be inspired by the girls’?
![]() | |
Alexander Firth did the first leg and how well he ran keeping up with the main group who were tightly packed and handing over to Oliver Dane in sixth place. Oliver ran maturely and paced it to perfection taking the lead half way round and extending this to give Henry Pymm a good 25m lead. Henry added to the lead and Aggi Smith had the task of bringing the Ranby team home in style, which he certainly did. Another super Ranby team effort.

All is safely gathered in, 'ere the winter storms begin, goes the old harvest hymn. And judging by the wonderful array of food donated by children at Ranby House School pre-prep department, it must have been a successful harvest in and around the village.
After the celebrations were over, the gifts were handed over to local elderly residents and The Well at Retford Baptist Church where they were directed to local families in need.
The Well administrator, Jean Coulson, said she was very grateful to Ranby House for considering those in need.
"The gifts will be used in the church's Family Kitchen – a project that provides bags of food donated by its membership to local families in need," she said.
"This is an important part of our ministry, which is a lifeline to families we know appreciate the help."
Ranby House School also raised £500 through a collection which will go to help provide poor African villages develop their farming techniques through the Send a Cow and Seeds for Africa projects.

The first major musical event of the term, the Group Music Competition, took place on Friday 19th September. All of the pupils and many members of staff took part in this exciting and hugely entertaining event. An enthusiastic audience provided great encouragement and the adjudicator, Mr Richard Leach (Worksop College), had the unenviable job of picking a winner.
This year the winning group was St. Albans with their witty presenters: Daniel Parkinson and Nancy McGuigan, their enthusiastic group rendition of "She’ll be Coming Round the Mountain" and Lexi’s, Lorna's, Georgina’s, and Caitlin's performance of "Thank you for the Music".
The SMT made an extremely entertaining appearance as the “Artless Bodgers” singing their own unique version of Consider Yourself.
Participating schools:
