Design Technology

Cool, exciting, fun, inspirational, ‘makes you think’ – Just a few of the adjectives and statements used to describe Design and Technology at Ranby House.

In DT, the emphasis is definitely on relevance – That is relevance to the pupils and their interests, relevance to skills and thinking techniques that will serve them well in all aspects of life and relevance in building a base towards future, formal qualifications. This relevance is achieved mainly through Design and Make project work.

The pupils design and make artifacts that they find interesting; artifacts such as jigsaws, mobile phone holders, hand held mazes, pen holders and i-pod speakers.

Throughout the design process the pupils are expected to consider aesthetics, ergonomics, user friendliness and sustainability issues. They are encouraged to design, evaluate and redesign if necessary. Prototyping also forms part of the curriculum and the children model their designs in a number of different ways and in various types of media. The emphasis on manufacturing is QUALITY and the pupils are always encouraged to plan well and to take their time when manufacturing, using the most appropriate materials and processes.

In summary, DT at Ranby House aims to be fun – with an educational twist!
