English at Ranby House School stimulates, excites and challenges!

Being one of the largest departments in school, with eight staff teaching English, there is plenty of scope for offering the pupils the best provision, in their study of language and literature.

On average, pupils have eight 35 minute periods per week of English and one homework session per week. Pupils are taught by their class teachers in Years 3 and 4, then by specialist English teachers in Year 5 and above.

A comprehensive and innovative scheme of work effectively provides continuity and breadth of curriculum throughout the department. Provision is made within the timetable and the scheme of work for use of the school’s two fully upgraded ICT suites, and all classrooms are fitted with either overhead projectors or interactive whiteboards.

Pupils are actively encouraged to develop their personal reading. The school Library is well stocked and continually updated. A visiting school bookshop provides further popular titles and latest release for purchase. An interest in reading and love of literature are also promoted in our annual ‘Book Week,’ during which visiting authors, illustrators and theatre groups dovetail with ‘literary’ activities organized by departmental staff.

Writing and Speaking and Listening are also promoted through the high standards set in the classroom, as well as through the annual ‘Poet Laureate’ competition, writing portfolios and articles for the ‘Ranbian’ Magazine. Debating competitions and the annual Public Speaking Competition also take place.

Spelling, reading and grammar are monitored and developed through recognized schemes and individual programmes and form an integral part of the departments scheme of work.

The department also makes effective use of the school’s Performing Arts Centre, where drama lessons help to compliment, extend and inform the work of the English department.
