HistoryHistory is always one of the most popular subjects at Ranby House School. In the early years of the school children follow a thematic approach to the subject introducing them to a range of historical periods and helping them to gain an understanding of different lifestyles and cultures. The pupils are encouraged to experience the past with visits to a local area where cave dwellers lived. They also visit museums to gain first hand access to historical source material. This leads onto more in depth study of the Tudors and Stuarts in year 5. A trip to see Bosworth Battlefield sets the scene for this course. In Year 6 the pupils study the Victorians giving them access to understand the development of towns, the penal system, public transport and politics. The Year 5 and 6 topics concentrate on British History and help the children to see the gradual development of the country. Many of the topics are foundational to our understanding of society today.
When the children enter Years 7 and 8 they begin preparation for both Scholarship and Common Entrance Examinations to senior schools. They are involved in the fascinating study of Medieval British History and develop a range of skills from essay writing to the interpretation of original source material. Over the past two years trips to medieval castles and cathedrals have brought this subject to life.
The History Department works closely with senior schools, especially Worksop College, in order to provide the skills and foundation necessary for further progression and enjoyment of a subject which we hope will be a life long passion.
