Latin

Introduction

The Latin course at Ranby is designed not only to foster an appreciation of the Roman contribution to the history and civilization of Europe, but also to assist pupils with their understanding and use of English.  Learning Latin helps to train pupils to be analytical and accurate, and will be of great help to those wishing to study modern languages.

Year 6

All pupils in Year 6 study Latin, but the course during this year

is a general introduction to some very basic Latin, with

significant emphasis on classical civilisation topics such as Roman

religion, slavery and Greek mythology.

Year 7

In year 7, Latin is only studied by pupils in 7A and 7S.  They have four lessons a week and begin to make speedy progress with the Common Entrance Latin syllabus, especially with regard to Latin syntax and grammar.  Some of the classical civilisation topics covered include The Trojan War, Chariot Racing and Roman food and housing.

Pupils, who join Ranby at the beginning of Year 7 and are placed in a Latin set, are sent a small pamphlet in the July prior to them starting which summarises the grammar studied in Year 6. Experience and statistics show that a pupil starting Latin in Year 7 will in no way be at a disadvantage when placed in a form with pupils who have studied some Latin in Year 6.
