BUGSY MALONE 9/7/2010
The Year 8 pupils put on a wonderful performance of the gangster play, Bugsy Malone, over three nights at the end of the summer term. The audience were seated in the theatre which had been converted into Fat Sam's Grandslam bar.
There were splurgings, a boxing match, dancing girls and portrayal of gangster life in the prohibition era of the 1920's in America.
The fantastic, lively and colourful production was enjoyed by all those who took part and by the full house audiences on all three nights.

On a gloriously hot summer evening, the school's theatre was full to capacity for the annual Summer Concert. With 90 children performing, the audience was in for a treat. Amongst the music ensembles and groups taking part were the School Orchestra, Jazz Band, Samba Group, Ranby Singers and String Group, to name a few, all of whom produced repertoires of an incredibly high standard. The evening was a wonderful celebration of all the music making that has taken place throughout the year. Many congratulations to all those who took part.
On a glorious warm sunny Saturday morning all the pupils, staff, parents and friends had a highly enjoyable and fun morning at the summer fair. Each class ran a stall which ranged from home baked cakes, to apple bobbing, a chocolate fountain, drop the pea in the bottle and a human fruit machine to name a few. The crowd were also entertained by the Jazz Band and the Pre-Prep singing songs from Mary Poppins. The ice cream van was kept busy and many children had a wonderful time on the bouncy castle, slides and trampolines. All funds raised will go towards the Astro Turf project.

Whilst the Reception children were recently undertaking their topic on ‘Water’, they discussed different uses for water.
Amongst other discussions and activities, they explored how, in the Christian faith, baptisms take place using water to cleanse and purify.
Our Chaplain, Father Darren, very kindly held a Baptism Service in the school Chapel for the Reception baby doll. There were parents and godparents and the baby doll was baptised Tulip.

We were invited to join a competition at Doddington Hall in Lincolnshire where we are to compete against other schools in the best scarecrow competition.
Many of our pupils have been very busy in the Art and Craft Activity on a Thursday afternoon over the past few weeks making scarecrows. There were 5 groups of 3 children ranging from Year 3 to Year 7. They were allowed to choose the theme of their scarecrow which ranged from prom queen to bag lady. The materials they used were all recycled items brought in from home. Over the course of 7 weeks the groups worked hard on design and construction and five stunning scarecrows came to fruition.
On completion of their creations, the children then invited the whole school to vote for their favourite scarecrow during a break time. The winner was 'Bob' who was more of a traditional scarecrow and very functional with cans hanging down from his arms to make a noise and scare birds away.
The activity group delivered 'Bob' to Doddington Hall on Thursday the 27th May and he was erected in the Kitchen Garden along with 9 other scarecrows from different schools.
The judging takes place over the half term holidays and the children can take their families along to look at their work of art.

Ranby House School recently held an exciting new event in their calendar and invited children from other local schools to come to Ranby House to participate in a fun filled Activity Morning. The activities on offer varied from cookery, to orienteering, to design technology and also music & drama, to name a few.
All the children had a super morning, many going home with “goody” bags of chocolate chip cookies they had made and beautiful keyrings that they had designed. For many the morning ended with a refreshing dip in the school swimming pool to help cool them down after all the excitement.

Earlier this year a nursery pupil at Ranby House spent a day on a film set in Sherwood Forest. She was dressed as a child of a medieval family in an outlaw camp. The role was for the film called "Robin Hood: The Truth Behind Hollywood's Most Filmed Legend", which was shown on the Discovery Channel on Wednesday 19th May and has been released alongside the new Russell Crowe Hollywood movie Robin Hood.
A picture of Lutra shows her in costume on the set with Jack the dog. The trailer of the film is available on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rer2WZ8kgzc

A wonderful achievement by all the pupils who took part.
On Sunday 16th May, the boarders, the Chaplain, staff and the Headmaster and his dog together with parishioners from the combined local parishes, joined together and enjoyed a long walk along the Chesterfield Canal, from Lady Bay Bridge back to the school as part of our Rogationtide celebrations. Years One and Two found out about food miles in a fun and exciting way when they recently visited Perlethorpe Environmental Education Centre. They had to complete an orienteering course with clues and information about food. Planes and ships carrying food may cause pollution in the environment so they learnt that buying locally was environmentally friendly.
They retrieved rubbish from a mini landfill and looked at the rates of decay. It takes about 6 weeks for a banana to decompose but an empty crisp packet was still decomposing after 6 years! Aluminium cans may take up to 450 years!
We worked individually to make recyclable plant pots from old newspaper and we planted seeds. We watched a nuthatch feed her chicks via a camera link into a nest box.
The highlight of the afternoon was river dipping with nets in the shallow part of the River Meden. We identified the creatures we caught and some of us got a little wet, but it was such good fun!

The Ranby House School Orienteering Team performed very well at the recent Bassetlaw Junior Schools Festival, held in Kings’ Park, Retford on Wednesday 28th April.

The Under 11 Cricket Team recently returned victorious from the S. Anselm's Cricket Tournament having won the trophy after a number of well fought and exciting matches.
The final against Birkdale School was another game which went down to the final over and there was none more deserving than the captain, Sam Routledge, who hit the winning runs through the covers off the second last ball of the match! After having reached the final in 2009, but being runners-up, it was great to return knowing that for the first time, Ranby House School would have their name inscribed on the trophy!
Congratulations to the entire squad.
At Ranby House School, Year 7 delighted two full houses with their amazing performance of the well known musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof Jr’, in the schools’ superb theatre within the dedicated Performing Arts Centre. The story centres on Tevye, his wife Golde, their five daughters, and his attempts to cope with their harsh existence under Tsarist rule and to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives in the small Jewish village of Anatevka in Russia.
Will Clothier played the role of Tevye superbly and his wife Golde was played by Emily Blackmore who put in a wonderful and convincing performance as the mother of five daughters. Having only worked on the production this term, the entire cast must be highly commended for their performance which included amazing singing and dancing.

Ranby House Year 5 and Year 6 boys and girls took part in this team event this week, competing against schools from as far north as Newcastle. Ranby House School held an Inter-School Maths Challenge Morning on Tuesday 2nd March to coincide with World Maths Day on Wednesday 3rd March. This highly successful and enriching event was the brainchild of Mrs Julie Ockenden, Head of Maths at Ranby House School. It was a team event aimed at Year 5 pupils, and each school that participated brought a team of 4 pupils.
The morning was fast moving and full of fun, with challenging and exciting maths orientated tasks for each team to undertake; encouraging them to work as a team, to problem solve and to think “outside the box”. The morning was not designed to be a competition; rather, the emphasis was placed on enriching and stimulating the pupils with some new ideas (as well as some old favourites) for this vital subject in the curriculum and every pupil was rewarded.
Those schools taking part were Ranskill Primary School, Highfields School, Ranby Primary School, Ashdell Preparatory School, North Leverton Primary School, Tickhill St Mary’s Primary School, Gamston Primary School and Ranby House School.

Ex-Ranbian Katie Walter, 17, has become the youngest person ever to reach the South Pole. Her massive achievement, which involved her treking 112 miles through ice, snow and extreme temperatures saw her arrive at the icy landmark of the South Pole on New Year's Day.
Katie, who started her trek from the point where legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton decided to turn back 100 years ago, had to haul a 40kg sled for seven hours a day to reach her target.
In addition to this incredible feat, Katie currently a pupil at Worksop College, has also raised around £1,500 for the air ambulance and £600 for Dyslexia Action.
The Ranby House School “Mummers Group” celebrated its twenty-second year of operation by performing "St. George and the Dragon" – a traditional Mummers’ Play - a total of eight times in support of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. The charity was chosen by the pupil performers; performances included private houses, local retired residents and the cast also entertained Retford Rotary Club.
The total raised was £1312.76 (very close to the highest figure!). The picture shows the cheque being presented to Mrs. Wendy King, representative of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
