Year 8

Common Entrance

The Common Entrance examination is sat at the end of Year 8.

The Latin C.E. paper has various levels depending on how much

Latin the pupils have studied. Pupils at Ranby are normally

entered for the Level 2 paper. The paper is divided as follows:-

                   85%  -        Latin language - translation of a Latin

passage and questions testing a pupil’s

understanding of the grammar and syntax.

15% -         Questions on a range of Classical

                                      Civilisation topics e.g. Gladiators, Roman

                                      Baths, Greek Mythology, Chariot Racing

in the Circus Maximus, the Roman Army.

Scholarship

Pupils at Ranby do not sit the Latin scholarship paper. (It is

equivalent to sitting a GCSE paper!) All pupils in forms 8S and

8A sit the Common Entrance Paper (level 2) in June with the

other C.E. candidates in Year 8. Pupils will sit the paper even if

they have already received an award from their chosen senior

school. Pupils who are destined for Worksop College will have

their papers marked by the Head of Latin at the college. Pupils

who are moving onto other senior schools will have their papers

marked internally at Ranby. The papers will then be sent on to

the appropriate schools.

Hadrian’s Wall Trip

In recent years, pupils in 8S have been taken on a trip to Hadrian’s Wall and Vindolanda in their final term. Apart from being great fun, the trip helps to reinforce what they have learned in class about life as a Roman soldier.

Senior School and Beyond.

Feedback from a number of senior schools has confirmed our

strongly held belief that pupils leave Ranby with an excellent

grounding in the Latin language. Moreover, they will leave

equipped with a more than satisfactory knowledge of the history

and achievements of the Roman civilisation.

Should they so choose, pupils leaving Ranby will be in a very

strong position to study and succeed at Latin GCSE.
