Years 3-6
In Years Three to Six, the main scheme used is Collins Primary Mathematics. This was implemented within the department in September 2004. The previous scheme used was Abacus Maths, published by Ginn and indeed much of the material from this scheme is still being used for teaching, especially with the lower sets in each year group.
The department also uses Target Maths, published by Elmwood Press and these books, whilst being more formal in their approach offer fabulous reinforcement and enrichment material for some children in the upper sets.
By using material from a variety of sources, we believe that we can cater for the needs of individual children allowing them to work at the level which gives them a sense of well being and confidence in their Mathematics.
Pupils work in their forms in Year 3. By Year 4, they are set into upper and lower groups, taught by the Year 4 class teachers. Movement between the sets is done regularly according to the child's attainment and progress. Years 5 and 6 are again taught in sets by specialist middle years Maths teachers. ICT plays an increasingly important role in both teaching and supplementing the maths curriculum; most teaching rooms have projectors and the use of interactive whiteboards is becoming more widespread and all classes have regular lessons in our ICT rooms each week.
