Years 5-8

Years 5 – 8 follow the “Metro” course, which provides them with a good grounding for progress into GCSE courses at senior school. Written work becomes more important, and lesson time increases to 3 lessons per week in years 5&6, 4 in Year 7 and 5 in Year 8.

A wide range of vocabulary and structure is studied, and the following tenses may be covered: Present, Simple Future, Perfect (Passé Composé), Imperfect, Future, Conditional and Pluperfect.

Exams at C.E. and Scholarship are taken in all 4 skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing, which have equal weighting.

The high point of the Department’s year is our annual exchange visit with Collège La Jordanne in Aurillac, the twin town to Bassetlaw situated in the beautiful Massif Central. 65% of the current Year 8 pupils have taken part in this visit in either Yr.7 or Yr. 8.

Each school sends a party of about 35 pupils to stay with the families of pupils in the twin school for a period of six nights. As well as the family experience, our stay in Aurillac generally includes skiing or other active sport, school experience, prehistoric caves, and other cultural/historical visits. We complete our visit with two nights and days in Paris, visiting a number of the major sights.
